The Art of Keeping Secrets:

The Hard Part About Costuming

Costume making is a labor of love, creativity, and passion. It’s a journey that starts with a spark of inspiration and evolves into something tangible, something magical. But here’s the thing about costuming that I’ve come to realize—it’s also an exercise in patience and restraint. As much as I want to shout from the rooftops about the incredible projects I’m working on, I can’t. Not yet. Because sometimes, the story isn’t mine to tell.

The Visionary’s Secret

When you’re creating costumes, especially for someone else or as part of a group, there’s a sacredness to the process. The design, the details, the final reveal—it’s all part of a bigger narrative that belongs to the person or the team you’re working with. Whether it’s a pageant gown, a family cosplay, or a group project for a major event, the unveiling is a moment that carries so much weight. And as the creator, it’s my job to honor that moment by keeping the secret until the time is right.

Don’t get me wrong—it’s hard. I want to share every stitch, every bead, every breakthrough moment. I want to post progress shots and gush about the inspiration behind the design. But I’ve learned that holding back is part of the artistry. It’s about building anticipation and letting the final product speak for itself.

The Projects in Progress

Right now, I have three exciting projects on my plate, each one as unique and meaningful as the next:

  1. A Costume for Miss Idaho for America Strong
This one is a true honor. I’m creating a costume for the current Miss Idaho as she prepares to compete at Nationals this August. It’s a piece that needs to embody strength, grace, and Idaho’s unique spirit. The pressure is real, but so is the excitement. I can’t wait for her to shine on that stage.
  2. Cosplay for Gem State Comicon
In just two weeks, my family and I will be heading to Gem State Comicon, and of course, we’re going in full costume. This project has been a collaborative effort with my daughters, who are always eager to help bring our ideas to life. It’s been a joy to work together, and I know the memories we make at the event will be just as special as the costumes themselves.
  3. Group Cosplay for FanX Salt Lake City
This Fall, I’m teaming up with an incredible group of cosplayers for FanX in Salt Lake City. Group projects are always a mix of chaos and creativity, but they’re also some of the most rewarding. There’s nothing like seeing a collective vision come to life and sharing that moment with people who share your passion.

Trusting the Process

As I work on these projects, I remind myself that the hard part—keeping the details under wraps—is also what makes the final reveal so special. It’s a reminder to trust the process, to focus on the craft, and to let the work speak for itself when the time comes.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I can’t share little glimpses along the way. I’ll be posting updates as we get closer to each event, giving you just enough to pique your curiosity without spoiling the surprise. After all, a little mystery never hurt anyone.

The Joy of the Reveal

In the end, the reveal is what makes it all worth it. Seeing someone light up as they step into a costume I’ve created, or watching a crowd react to a group cosplay—it’s a feeling like no other. It’s the culmination of weeks (sometimes months) of hard work, and it’s a moment I’ll always treasure.

So, while I may be keeping a few secrets for now, trust me when I say it’s all leading up to something amazing. Stay tuned, because the best is yet to come.
