Down the Rabbit Hole:

Creating My Queen of Hearts for an Alice in Wonderland Soirée

There’s something magical about stepping into a world where the ordinary rules don’t apply—a place where life-size mushrooms sprout from the floor, doors beckon with whimsical doorknobs, and every corner feels like a page from a favorite storybook. Last weekend, I had the absolute joy of attending an extravagant Alice in Wonderland-themed party at the newly transformed Amelie’s (formerly Country Bay Bistro). And let me tell you, I went all in on my costume: the Queen of Hearts.

The Creative Journey: From Decks of Cards to Royalty

Every costume starts as a spark—an idea that flickers and grows until it’s impossible to ignore. For this event, I knew I wanted to channel the Queen of Hearts, but not just any queen. I wanted to embody her boldness, her drama, and, of course, her love for hearts. So, I gathered five full decks of playing cards and got to work.

Here’s a little secret: Not every card in a deck is a heart. So, with some red spray paint and a steady hand, I transformed every spade, club, and diamond into a heart—talk about commitment to the theme! My kitchen table looked like a card factory, but I was determined to give every piece that signature Queen of Hearts vibe.

As I started constructing the shoulder pieces, I realized my original design was… well, let’s just say “royally bulky.” It didn’t feel right. In a moment of creative panic (and a little late-night desperation), I took a leap: I split the whole thing in half and doubled everything onto one shoulder. Suddenly, it was sleek, dramatic, and multi-dimensional—a showstopper rather than a shoulder-stopper.

Stepping Into Wonderland

Arriving at Amelie’s, I felt transformed. Not just because of the costume (though I did feel like a queen!), but because of the energy in the room. With my best friend Nara as the Jaberwocky by my side and amazing photographer and videographer, we were set for a great night! The space had been completely reimagined: towering mushrooms, quirky doors, and every detail dripping with Wonderland whimsy. The five-course dinner was a foodie’s dream, and the DJ kept the party spinning late into the night—there was never a dull moment.

Why I Love the Process

With every new costume, I learn something—about materials, about design, and about myself. But what I love most isn’t just the creative process. It’s the feeling—the confidence, the excitement, the memories made while wearing something crafted with intention and heart. That’s the real magic. When we dare to step into our creativity, we give ourselves (and others) permission to be bold, authentic, and unforgettable.

So here’s to the next costume, the next adventure, and the next chance to feel like royalty—even if just for a night.
